The Islamic State's leader Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi was killed in Syria's southern province of Deraa in mid-October and his death was recently announced by the organisation itself. However, his killing does not at all mean the end of Deraa's security problems. Assassinations and other security incidents take place on almost a daily basis. It is precisely the obscurity surrounding many if not most of these killings and attacks that makes the security problems so difficult to resolve. Very sadly, one of the latest victims of this violence was the father of a dear friend whose life I document in this post. He was killed on 1 December 2022.
